Morant's tenure in Memphis derailed dramatically after his second All-Star appearance in 2023. The 26-year-old played just 79 games over three seasons, missing time due to multiple suspensions and injuries. He served an eight-game ban in March 2023 and a 25-game suspension to open the 2023-24 season, both stemming from firearm incidents on Instagram Live. Shoulder and elbow surgeries further limited his availability, with his production dropping to 19.5 points per game last season.

Portland acquires Morant's $87 million remaining on his rookie extension, adding him to a backcourt that already features Damian Lillard, Jrue Holiday, Scoot Henderson, and Shaedon Sharpe.
