Ja Morant Traded to Portland Trail Blazers in Blockbuster Deal

The Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to trade two-time All-Star Ja Morant to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Jerami Grant and Kris Murray, according to ESPN sources. This move completes Memphis' fire sale of former franchise cornerstones, as they've now dealt Morant, Desmond Bane, and Jaren Jackson Jr. since their first-round playoff exit in 2025.

Morant's tenure in Memphis derailed dramatically after his second All-Star appearance in 2023. The 26-year-old played just 79 games over three seasons, missing time due to multiple suspensions and injuries. He served an eight-game ban in March 2023 and a 25-game suspension to open the 2023-24 season, both stemming from firearm incidents on Instagram Live. Shoulder and elbow surgeries further limited his availability, with his production dropping to 19.5 points per game last season.

Portland acquires Morant's $87 million remaining on his rookie extension, adding him to a backcourt that already features Damian Lillard, Jrue Holiday, Scoot Henderson, and Shaedon Sharpe. The Trail Blazers are coming off their first playoff appearance since 2021 and hope Morant can recapture his 22.4-point, 7.4-assist career form. Memphis pivots to rebuild around No. 3 pick Cameron Boozer, ending a disappointing era that produced just one playoff series win in four appearances.
