Hornets in active talks to move LaMelo Ball

The Charlotte Hornets have entered serious trade negotiations for star point guard LaMelo Ball, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania. Multiple clubs are submitting aggressive offers, and the Hornets could reach a deal within 24‑48 hours if their conditions are met. Ball, who enjoys a good rapport in Charlotte, still has three years left on his contract. The team fell just short of the play‑in, ending a postseason drought that began in 2016.

Ball averages 20.1 points, 7.1 assists and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 36.8% from three over 72 games this season, his most durable stretch since 2021‑22. The Hornets vaulted from 19 wins the year before to 44, fueled by Ball’s health, rookie Kon Knueppel’s three‑point surge and Brandon Miller’s 20.2‑point output. His clutch layup lifted Charlotte past Miami in the first play‑in, but a 121‑90 loss to Orlando ended their run.

Ball is eligible to sign a two‑year, $119.2 million extension on July 6, a figure that could tip trade valuations. He is three years into his deal, so a move would likely net Charlotte a first‑round pick and a young prospect. Recent fines – $35,000 for a collision with Bam Adebayo and $25,000 for profanity after the overtime win – add a disciplinary wrinkle. A deal now would reshape Charlotte’s championship outlook.
