James Harden has declined his $42.3 million player option for 2026-27, opening contract negotiations with the Cleveland Cavaliers as the sides work on a new multiyear deal, sources told ESPN. The move comes after Harden helped Cleveland reach the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018, following a midseason trade that reshaped the roster around Donovan Mitchell.

Harden averaged 20.5 points, 7.7 assists and 4.8 rebounds in 26 games with the Cavs after the All-Star break, shooting 46% from the field and 43.5% from three. However, his playoff numbers dropped significantly, with 19.2 points, 5.5 assists and 5.1 rebounds on 41% shooting, including a 29.9% mark from beyond the arc. His turnovers also spiked to 4.7 per game in the postseason, the highest of his playoff career.

Despite the uneven playoff performance, Cleveland is optimistic about building around Harden for a full season alongside Mitchell. The 37-year-old guard will turn 38 in August and has expressed willingness to adapt his game for the team's success. The Cavs believe a fresh start in 2026-27 could yield better chemistry and results.
