Yankees' Max Fried to Throw Off Mound Saturday

Max Fried will throw off a mound Saturday for the first time since landing on the injured list with a recurrence of a bone bruise in his left elbow. Manager Aaron Boone said if the session goes well, Fried could throw batting practice early next week. Fried, 32, is optimistic he'll miss only the minimum 15 days before rejoining the rotation. "I've been feeling good," Fried said. "All in all, we're really encouraged."

Fried owns a 2.81 ERA in 15 starts this season after missing over two months earlier with the same injury. He said this setback is less severe and plans to use the time to correct mechanics that have caused timing issues. "Just better mechanics, not being out of timing," Fried said. "I've been fighting my mechanics a lot this year."

The Yankees also placed third baseman Ryan McMahon on the IL with a Grade 2 left thumb sprain suffered sliding into second base Wednesday. They expect to activate Cody Bellinger on Sunday from a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. Bellinger's return will create a roster crunch, likely forcing a decision between optioning utilityman Max Schuemann or outfielder Spencer Jones.
