The New York Yankees completed a historic three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals on Sunday, winning 5-3 behind Ben Rice's two-run triple in the eighth inning. New York rallied in the eighth inning or later in all three games, a feat not accomplished by the franchise since the 1910 New York Highlanders swept the Cleveland Naps.

The Yankees trailed 3-2 entering the eighth before Rice drove a ball off the center-field wall that Dylan Crews couldn't corral. After adding an insurance run in the ninth, New York outscored Washington 10-0 in the eighth and ninth innings across the series. "Winning at-bats in different ways in all three games," manager Aaron Boone said.

On Friday, Jazz Chisholm Jr. delivered a two-run homer in the ninth for a 5-3 win. Saturday featured a four-run eighth inning with homers by Ryan McMahon, Trent Grisham and Paul Goldschmidt. The previous MLB team to sweep a three-game series while trailing in the eighth or later each time was Colorado at San Francisco in June 2014.
