Professional women's baseball is set to launch with the unveiling of four team names and logos for the Women's Professional Baseball League (WPBL). The league's inaugural season begins August 1 in Springfield, Illinois, and will conclude in late September with playoffs.

Star pitcher Kelsie Whitmore, the first overall draft pick, will play for the San Francisco Firebells. Mo'ne Davis, a former Little League star, joins the Los Angeles Queens, alongside Japanese pitcher Ayami Sato. The other two franchises are the New York Heights and the Boston Hunters.

Each team name honors pioneering women: the Heights after civil rights leader Dorothy Irene Height, the Firebells after San Francisco's Lillie Hitchcock Coit, the Queens after baseball pioneer Lizzie Murphy, and the Hunters after Boston physician Harriot K. Hunt. The league aims to replicate the legacy of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.
