The Minnesota Twins sent Royce Lewis back to the minor leagues following his struggles upon returning from injury. The former top draft pick has been overwhelmed at the plate, striking out 25 times in 68 plate appearances while batting .132 with one home run and five RBI since his April 21 return from a sprained left knee.

Lewis showed promise before getting hurt, hitting .222 with two doubles, two homers and eight RBIs with an .822 OPS in 12 games. But his return has been disastrous, showcasing the inconsistency that has plagued his development. The demotion mirrors what the Twins did last week with right fielder Matt Wallner, signaling a pattern of patience worn thin with young players.

Minnesota also placed catcher Ryan Jeffers on the injured list with a left hamate bone fracture, designated right-handed pitcher Justin Topa for assignment, and recalled Travis Adams from Triple-A St. Paul. The moves bring Orlando Arcia and Alex Jackson to the majors, providing roster flexibility while the team navigates multiple injuries.

For Lewis, this serves as a harsh reminder of the adjustment period ahead in the majors. Despite being the franchise's top prospect, he's now 26 with limited development time remaining. The Twins will hope a reset in the minors provides the confidence and reps needed to unlock his potential.
