Sale Dominates Despite Illness in Braves Win

Chris Sale delivered a masterful performance for the Atlanta Braves despite battling illness, allowing just one hit over six innings in a 5-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday. The nine-time All-Star, who celebrated his 37th birthday two days earlier, didn't reveal his condition during postgame interviews, but manager Walt Weiss disclosed that Sale was 'sick as a dog' and nearly scratched from the start.

The Braves were hoping for three to four innings from their veteran left-hander, but Sale exceeded expectations by retiring 17 of the 18 batters he faced. The only blemish was a solo home run by Shea Langeliers in the fourth inning. Sale's performance came after he won the National League Cy Young Award in his first season with Atlanta in 2024 and threw six scoreless innings on Opening Day against Kansas City.

Sale's resilience extends beyond this single outing. He recently passed Hall of Famers Bob Feller and Warren Spahn for 30th place on the career strikeout list and is now just 19 strikeouts away from longtime Braves star Tom Glavine. The Braves, who missed the playoffs in 2025 after seven straight postseason appearances, are off to a 4-2 start this season and hope Sale's leadership will help them return to October baseball.
