Catcher Roberto Perez, 37, announced his retirement from Major League Baseball Tuesday after a 10-season career that included eight years with the Cleveland Guardians. Perez, a two-time Gold Glove winner, made his MLB debut in 2014 and compiled a .207 career batting average with 55 home runs and 193 RBI. He played for Pittsburgh in 2022 and San Francisco in 2023, but his most impactful years came in Cleveland, where he helped the team reach the 2016 World Series.

Perez hit two home runs in that seven-game loss to the Chicago Cubs. His best offensive season came in 2019, batting .239 with 24 homers and 63 RBI, earning him Gold Gloves in both 2019 and the shortened 2020 season. Perez, a Puerto Rican native, also contributed to Puerto Rico's runner-up finish in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

While the specific reason for his retirement wasn't detailed, Perez expressed on social media that stepping away was the right time to begin his next chapter, leaving the game with respect and appreciation.
