Rhett Lowder's 1.30 ERA Sets Reds Record

Cincinnati Reds rookie Rhett Lowder etched his name in franchise history Saturday night, lowering his ERA to 1.30 through eight starts—the lowest mark for any Reds pitcher since the earned run became official in 1913. The 24-year-old right-hander's five scoreless starts of at least five innings through his first eight career outings matched a feat previously accomplished only by Fernando Valenzuela in 1981.

Lowder's gem against the Texas Rangers came in a 2-0 victory where he allowed just three two-out singles over six innings while striking out four. The performance marked his second strong start of the season after returning from missing all of 2025 with forearm and oblique strains. His 1.30 ERA surpassed Tom Browning's 1.52 mark through eight starts in 1984-85 as the best in Reds history.

Despite the historic numbers, Lowder remained focused on winning rather than personal accolades. Reds manager Terry Francona praised the young pitcher's maturity, noting he never appeared to be searching for his rhythm despite describing the outing as "a grind." Catcher Jose Trevino highlighted Lowder's command and poise, predicting a long career for the seventh overall pick from Wake Forest in the 2023 draft.
