Red Sox Option Struggling Brayan Bello to Triple-A Worcester

The Boston Red Sox are sending Brayan Bello to Triple-A Worcester after another disastrous outing against the Baltimore Orioles. The right-hander surrendered eight runs, including six in the first inning, pushing his season ERA to 6.34 and dropping his record to 2-6. This continues a downward spiral for a pitcher once considered Boston's future.

Bello faced 12 batters in that brutal first inning - the most by any Red Sox pitcher in the opening frame over the past 75 seasons. His splits tell the story: a 9.68 ERA in 30⅔ innings as a starter compared to just 0.71 ERA in 25⅓ innings when Boston uses an opener. He's now allowed 15 first-inning earned runs, matching a franchise record for futility through eight starts.

Through an interpreter, Bello dismissed questions about moving to the bullpen. 'I've always been a starter,' he said, adding that he's simply having a bad season and believes he can turn it around. That confidence stems from previous success - double-digit wins in each of the last three seasons and a 3.35 ERA in 2025. He even started Game 2 of Boston's AL Wild Card Series against the Yankees last October.

Lefty Joe La Sorsa, acquired from Pittsburgh for cash considerations, will take Bello's roster spot. The move signals Boston's urgency to stabilize their rotation while giving Bello a chance to reset in Worcester.
