Orioles put closer Helsley on IL, bullpen reshuffle follows

Baltimore placed closer Ryan Helsley on the 15‑day injured list Friday, retroactive to Tuesday, after he felt right‑elbow discomfort while warming up in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s 6‑1 victory over Chicago. Helsley did not enter the game and will miss at least two weeks as the Orioles chase a playoff push.

The 31‑year‑old has converted eight of nine save chances this season, a solid rate despite a previous stint on the IL from May 1 to June 16 for elbow inflammation. He signed a two‑year, $28 million free‑agent deal in December, underscoring Baltimore’s investment in a late‑season closer. Manager Craig Albernaz said Helsley is reviewing options and more information will emerge soon.

Baltimore (40‑48) recalled infielder‑outfielder Jeremiah Jackson and right‑hander Anthony Nunez from Triple‑A Norfolk, while designating catcher Chadwick Tromp for assignment. The moves give the club depth as it opens a three‑game series against the Cincinnati Reds Friday night. Losing Helsley tightens the bullpen, forcing the staff to rely on the newly added arms.

With the Orioles hovering below .500, the bullpen reshuffle could affect their race for the wild‑card. If Jackson or Nunez can inherit closing duties, Baltimore may preserve its slim lead over the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East. The next three games will test the club’s depth without its primary closer.
