The Baltimore Orioles placed right-hander Chris Bassitt on the 15-day injured list retroactive to Friday due to low back discomfort. The 37-year-old, who signed a one-year, $18.5 million deal with Baltimore in February, is 4-4 with a 5.27 ERA this season and shares the team lead in victories. Manager Craig Albernaz confirmed the issue after Bassitt's last start Wednesday in Boston.

Baltimore recalled rookie right-hander Trey Gibson from Triple-A Norfolk to replace Bassitt in the rotation for Monday's game against Seattle. Gibson, who is 1-0 with a 3.65 ERA in three appearances, earned his first career win on May 27 against Tampa Bay. The move creates immediate need for Baltimore's starting pitching.

The Orioles also announced right-hander Eduarniel Núñez was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs. Baltimore had purchased Núñez's contract from the Athletics on May 15 before designating him for assignment Thursday. Bassitt's absence creates a significant hole in Baltimore's rotation as they navigate the competitive AL East.
