Nationals' Jake Irvin Heads to IL After Shoulder Strain Diagnosis

Washington Nationals right-hander Jake Irvin landed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a right shoulder strain, one day after delivering five hitless innings in a 2-0 victory over Atlanta. The timing proved particularly frustrating for Irvin, who was working on a no-hitter when shoulder tightness emerged in the fifth inning.

Both Irvin and manager Drew Butera expressed relief that MRI results revealed only a strain rather than a more serious injury. Irvin acknowledged experiencing shoulder discomfort previously, but nothing approaching Saturday's severity. He called the diagnosis "good news" and the best possible outcome given the circumstances.

The Nationals countered by recalling left-hander PJ Poulin from Triple-A Rochester to bolster their bullpen depth. Poulin, 3-0 with a 3.32 ERA in 23 appearances, provides immediate relief support while Washington determines how to fill Irvin's rotation spot. Butera hasn't named a replacement starter yet.

Irvin's injury interrupts what had been a promising stretch, marking his first win in nearly two months. His ability to recognize the issue early and exit the game likely prevented a more severe setback. The Nationals expect him to resume throwing Tuesday, with a target return shortly after the minimum 15-day stint.
