MLB Work Stoppage Threatens 2028 Olympics Participation, Union Warns

The Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) has warned that a potential work stoppage during the 2027 season could derail plans for MLB players to participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Acting union head Bruce Meyer stated that if the 2027 season is canceled, big league players would be unable to compete in the Olympics. This warning comes as the MLB and the union prepare for contract negotiations starting in April or May to replace the expiring agreement, with a management lockout expected to begin December 2.

Meyer emphasized that a lost 2027 season would eliminate MLB players from the 2028 Games. The federations involved, including the IOC and MLB, still have significant issues to resolve, such as insurance, player accommodations, transportation, and housing, before players can appear at the Olympics. Players currently receive 'first-class' accommodations during the regular season and are unlikely to accept dormitory-style rooms used at the Olympics. Discussions are exploring exhibition games during an extended 2028 break for non-Olympic players.
