The New York Mets have hired six-time All-Star J.D. Martinez as a special adviser to baseball operations, a source confirmed to ESPN. The 38-year-old slugger, who spent the 2024 season with the Mets as a player, will transition into a front office role after not announcing his retirement. Martinez appeared in 120 games last season, batting .235 with 16 home runs and serving as a clubhouse leader.

Martinez's new position comes two years after joining the Mets organization as a player. During his playing career, he won the 2018 World Series with the Boston Red Sox and finished fourth in American League MVP voting that season. The three-time Silver Slugger winner compiled impressive career numbers: .283 batting average, 331 home runs, and an .863 OPS across 1,642 games with six major league teams including the Astros, Tigers, and Diamondbacks.

In addition to Martinez, Hall of Fame outfielder Carlos Beltran, who spent seven seasons with the Mets, serves as a special assistant to president of baseball operations David Stearns. The Boston Globe was first to report Martinez's front office appointment.
