Jesus Luzardo has agreed to a $135 million, five-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, citing the team's stable rotation and his improved health as key factors. The 28-year-old left-hander finalized the deal that begins in 2027 and includes a 2032 team option. Luzardo joined the Phillies ahead of the 2025 season in a trade with Miami and helped solidify their pitching staff.

During his introductory news conference at the Phillies' Clearwater facility, Luzardo emphasized the comfort of pitching alongside established starters like Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola. The Phillies have invested heavily in their rotation, with Cristopher Sanchez earning $22.5 million through 2028 and Nola securing a $172 million, seven-year deal. Luzardo went 15-7 with a 3.92 ERA and 216 strikeouts last season, finishing seventh in NL Cy Young Award voting.

The contract represents a strategic move by Philadelphia to lock up a key rotation piece before he could test free agency. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has prioritized pitching depth, believing it provides a competitive edge. Luzardo's emergence allowed the team to let Ranger Suarez walk in free agency, as the left-hander signed with Boston for $130 million.
