Arizona Diamondbacks rookie Jose Fernandez joined elite company with a two-homer debut, becoming just the seventh player in MLB history to achieve the feat. The 22-year-old Venezuelan third baseman delivered a go-ahead three-run shot in the eighth inning against Tigers closer Kenley Jansen, capping Arizona's 7-5 victory on Tuesday night.

Fernandez wasn't even on the Diamondbacks' opening day roster, joining the team Monday after Pavin Smith went on the injured list with left elbow soreness. The No. 27 prospect in the organization made an immediate impact, finishing with three hits and four RBIs. His power display came just six days after Cleveland's Chase DeLauter also homered twice in his MLB debut.

Manager Torey Lovullo praised Fernandez's journey through the Diamondbacks' system and academy. The rookie began his big league career with an infield single in his first at-bat, followed by a solo homer, before joining baseball legends like Trevor Story and Bert Campaneris in the two-homer debut club. "I returned to my days as a kid -- just a dream come true," Fernandez said through an interpreter.
