Justin Verlander's return to the Detroit Tigers ended in disappointment as the Diamondbacks roughed up the three-time Cy Young Award winner in a 9-6 victory. Corbin Carroll hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs, while Michael Soroka threw an immaculate inning to become just the fourth pitcher in Arizona history to achieve the feat.

Soroka dominated through five scoreless innings, striking out 10 batters including a perfect fifth inning. The 28-year-old right-hander struck out Javier Báez, Kerry Carpenter, and Gleyber Torres on nine consecutive pitches. Verlander, 43, struggled through 3⅔ innings, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks in his first start since signing a $13 million, one-year deal with Detroit.

The Tigers mounted a furious comeback in the seventh inning, scoring six runs to cut the deficit to three. However, Diamondbacks reliever Juan Morillo escaped a bases-loaded jam to preserve the lead. Ildemaro Vargas added a solo homer in the seventh, and Paul Sewald earned his first save as Arizona won their home opener after being swept in Los Angeles.
