The Chicago Cubs will be without starter Jameson Taillon until after the All-Star break after he strained his left hamstring Sunday against San Francisco. The right-hander exited in the second inning and was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday ahead of the Colorado Rockies series.

Taillon, 24, owns a 2-5 record with a 5.19 ERA this season. Chicago responded by reinstating Matt Shaw from the 10-day IL and recalling pitchers Ethan Roberts and Tyler Ferguson from Triple-A Iowa. The team also optioned Kevin Alcántara to Iowa and placed Trent Thornton on the paternity list.

The injury compounds pitching depth issues as Matthew Boyd, Cade Horton and Justin Steele remain sidelined. Boyd, the opening-day starter, is targeting a weekend return in San Francisco. Manager Craig Counsell acknowledged the timing creates challenges with margins for error shrinking in the competitive NL Central race.

Shaw, hitting .242 with three homers and 12 RBIs, said he's ready for any role including late-inning pinch-running duties. His versatility provides some relief as the Cubs navigate a month-long stretch without one of their rotation anchors.
