Giants reshuffle third-base staff as Borg moves, Wotus steps in

The San Francisco Giants moved third‑base coach Hector Borg to a player‑development role on Friday, replacing him with special assistant Ron Wotus on an interim basis. Borg, 41, had been promoted to the position before the season but drew criticism after a series of questionable in‑game calls, most notably a failed send‑home attempt that cost the team a 3‑2 loss to Arizona.

Manager Tony Vitello praised Borg’s work ethic and character, calling him one of the hardest‑working and most personable members of the staff. Yet Vitello stressed the need for rapid change, noting that waiting until season’s end to install a permanent third‑base coach would be “way, way, way far away.” The decision aims to stabilize in‑game strategy as the Giants chase a playoff spot.

Wotus, 65, returns to the role that defined his early career, having served as the Giants’ third‑base coach from 1998 to 2017 and as bench coach through 2021. His familiarity with the roster should smooth the transition, and Vitello expects the interim appointment to give the club a clearer picture before naming a permanent replacement soon.
