San Francisco Giants named former outfielder Gary Pettis third‑base coach, filling a vacancy left by Hector Borg's move to player development. Pettis, a 68‑year‑old native of Oakland, joins the staff on Wednesday, just before the Brewers matchup. The change follows the Giants’ decision to reassign Borg after the season opened during the early season in.

With 27 years of coaching experience, 22 of which were in the majors, Pettis brings a proven track record. He served as Houston Astros’ third‑base coach from 2015 to 2024, helping the club capture World Series titles in 2017 and 2022. His veteran eye will guide runners at the Giants’ plate for the upcoming season.

Pettis’ playing résumé includes five Gold Glove awards and stints with the California Angels, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers and San Diego Padres. He was first‑base coach for the Rangers (2007‑12) and third‑base coach (2013‑14), before similar roles with the White Sox and Mets. His defensive insight is expected to sharpen the infield for the next campaign.

Borg, who had been named third‑base coach before the season, was reassigned Friday, leaving Ron Wotus to step in on an interim basis. The Giants’ coaching shuffle comes as the team seeks to stabilize its infield communication ahead of a tight National League West race. Pettis’ arrival signals a focus on veteran leadership midseason competition.
