Giants Place Matt Gage on Injured List, Recall Dylan Smith from Triple-A

San Francisco Giants left-handed reliever Matt Gage landed on the 15-day injured list with right knee inflammation, dealing a blow to the team's bullpen depth. Gage posted a 2.63 ERA over 29 appearances this season, compiling a 4-1 record with one save while leading the club in relief outings.

Manager Tony Vitello acknowledged Gage had been dealing with knee tenderness for some time. The move is retroactive to Tuesday, though Vitello offered no timeline for Gage's return. Gage's absence creates an opening in a relief corps that has leaned heavily on his consistency this year.

To fill the roster spot, the Giants recalled right-hander Dylan Smith from Triple-A Sacramento. Smith appeared once for San Francisco earlier this season, tossing two-thirds of a scoreless inning. In 15 games with Sacramento, he posted a 1-1 record with a 3.98 ERA and one save.

Smith brings previous major league experience from Detroit, where he went 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in seven games last season. His promotion suggests the Giants value his proven track record over untested internal options as they navigate the middle innings without Gage.
