New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole threw 4⅓ innings in his first minor league rehab start since Tommy John surgery sidelined him for the entire 2025 season. The six-time All-Star allowed three runs on three hits, including a two-run homer, while striking out three batters for Double-A Somerset against Reading.

Cole threw 36 of 44 pitches for strikes before exiting with a 7-3 lead after the fourth inning. Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed optimism about Cole's progress, noting this represents another important step in his recovery. The 35-year-old Cy Young Award winner had been gradually building up through spring training appearances and simulated games.

Meanwhile, shortstop Anthony Volpe also progressed in his rehab from shoulder surgery, going 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored, and a stolen base. The Yankees anticipate Cole's return in June, utilizing the full 30-day rehab window available for pitchers recovering from Tommy John surgery. Boone emphasized the importance of proper progression, stating they're focused on ensuring both players are fully healthy before rejoining the rotation.
