Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz will begin his rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Louisville, targeting a return to Cincinnati's lineup early next week. Manager Terry Francona outlined a four-day progression that includes playing shortstop Friday, serving as designated hitter Saturday, and completing a full game at shortstop Sunday.

De La Cruz has been sidelined since June 1 with a right hamstring strain after exiting the May 31 game against Atlanta. The injury snapped his remarkable streak of 276 consecutive games played, which ranked sixth-longest in Reds history since 1961. That durability run started July 30, 2024, showcasing his importance to the club.

Before hitting the injured list, De La Cruz was batting .280 with 12 home runs through his first 60 games. His absence leaves a significant hole in Cincinnati's lineup, as the dynamic shortstop combines power and speed that few players can match at his position.

The earliest activation date is June 23 against Milwaukee, giving the Reds a potential boost for their upcoming series. De La Cruz's successful rehab could provide the offensive spark Cincinnati needs as they navigate a critical stretch in the NL Central race.
