A few weeks ago, Tarik Skubal being dealt before the MLB trade deadline seemed inevitable. Now, the Detroit Tigers, fresh off a weekend series win over the Los Angeles Angels and sitting 4½ games out of a wild‑card spot with a 25‑15 June record, are debating whether to hold onto the reigning, back‑to‑back AL Cy Young winner past the Aug. 3 deadline. Rival executives say the Tigers will keep Skubal if they continue playing well, but any slip‑up could make him available.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have little immediate need for Skubal. Their projected playoff rotation—Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shohei Ohtani, Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow—combined for a 2.55 ERA and 113 innings in last year’s postseason, though health questions linger. The Dodgers also balk at surrendering prospects, preferring to add talent via free agency and protect their farm system, which remains among the league’s best. Front office leaders Andrew Friedman and Mark Walter have signaled they will pay any expense to win, but they remain reluctant to part with high‑end prospects.

Nevertheless, a deal makes sense for Los Angeles. The Tigers seek outfield help and a rotation replacement, areas where the Dodgers can offer prospects like Josue De Paula, Zyhir Hope, Eduardo Quintero and pitchers Justin Wrobleski, Emmet Sheehan and River Ryan. While acquiring Skubal would cost prospect capital, the Dodgers’ willingness to spend and their desire to maximize the current window could push them toward a bid. Such a move would test the Dodgers’ balance between present success and future sustainability, a tension that has defined their recent roster decisions.
