The Arizona Diamondbacks lost 5-4 to the St. Louis Cardinals when Ketel Marte failed to challenge a called strike three by umpire Bill Miller for the final out. Television replays showed Riley O'Brien's 100 mph sinker was high and out of the zone. The D-backs had both ABS challenges remaining.

"I was looking for a breaking ball," Marte said. "Got the two-seamer and I was a little bit surprised." Manager Torey Lovullo hadn't spoken to Marte yet. It was a tough night for the veteran, who also made an error in the first inning leading to two unearned runs.

Lovullo said Marte "thought it was a strike" and "sometimes you've got to trust your own instincts." The D-backs had other mistakes, including Jorge Barrosa picked off in the ninth after Nolan Arenado's leadoff walk. Lovullo refused to pin the loss on Marte, noting "15 other things" went wrong as their four-game winning streak ended.
