Cubs reliever Trent Thornton is day-to-day with a bruised left heel after being struck by a 108.9 mph comebacker from Riley Greene in the 10th inning Monday. A CT scan Tuesday revealed no fractures, and Thornton played catch before the game against the Detroit Tigers, optimistic about avoiding the injured list. "I got very lucky," he said. "Definitely a lot of positive signs today."

Thornton credited his Mizuno cleats with a hard shell heel for preventing serious injury, noting his other cleats have a soft outer shell in that area. The Cubs used seven relievers in Monday's 8-6 loss but have Thursday off. Fellow reliever Phil Maton went on the 15-day IL the same day for the third time this season with right knee tendinitis and received a platelet-rich plasma injection Tuesday, expected to miss three weeks.

Manager Craig Counsell said utilityman Matt Shaw, on the IL since June 29 with a sprained left hand, is traveling to Arizona and may start swinging soon. "The good news was the additional imaging showed improved healing," Counsell said. "That makes Matt feel good, obviously, so we just got to get through the last little bit."
