Cubs Opening Day Bullpen Shaken by Injuries to Hodge, Wicks

The Chicago Cubs will begin the season without two key pitching prospects, as manager Craig Counsell announced Sunday that Porter Hodge and Jordan Wicks will start on the injured list. Hodge, a right-hander, will be shut down for several weeks due to a flexor strain, while lefty Wicks remains sidelined with nerve irritation.

Hodge's injury emerged after his most recent spring outing, with elbow imaging revealing the strain. The 24-year-old was competing for a bullpen spot after a disappointing 2025 season where he posted a 6.27 ERA across 26 appearances while battling multiple injuries. Counsell acknowledged the setback, noting it will delay Hodge's progress significantly.

Wicks, 26, has been out since late February and won't be ready for Opening Day. The left-hander has bounced between the majors and minors in recent seasons and was viewed as organizational depth. Counsell indicated both injuries aren't considered long-term, with Wicks expected to resume throwing later this month and Hodge to restart his throwing program once healthy.
