Cade Cavalli took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, striking out 10 over a career-high eight innings as the Washington Nationals routed the Chicago Cubs 7-0. Cavalli retired the first 15 batters before Dansby Swanson walked to lead off the sixth.

Michael Busch blooped an opposite-field single for Chicago's lone hit with two outs in the seventh. Clayton Beeter finished the combined one-hitter with a perfect ninth. Cavalli (10-5) needed only 29 pitches through three innings and 54 through five.

"I wasn't really thinking about the no-hitter in the third," first-year manager Blake Butera said. Cavalli's strategy countered Chicago's patient approach; the Cubs entered with the most walks in the majors. The right-hander escaped a jam in the sixth after a five-run fifth inning.

Max Scherzer threw the last Nationals no-hitter on Oct. 3, 2015. Only one no-hitter has occurred in the majors this season—a combined effort by Houston Astros pitchers on May 25. Blake Snell was the last solo no-hitter pitcher on Aug. 2, 2024.
