Blue Jays place Barger on IL, recall Piñango for Rays series

Toronto placed outfielder Addison Barger back on the 10‑day injured list Monday, citing right elbow inflammation. Barger had just returned after a month‑long stint on the IL and produced a spectacular 101.2‑mph throw that sent Jorge Soler home, the hardest outfield assist recorded by a Blue Jay since Statcast began in 2015. He will miss the opening series against the AL East‑leading Rays.

The Jays filled the roster hole by recalling 24‑year‑old outfielder Yohendrick Piñango from Triple‑A Buffalo and selecting right‑hander Yariel Rodríguez. Piñango has logged 11 hits in 26 at‑bats for Toronto, while Rodríguez posted a 2.63 ERA in 11 games for Buffalo. Left‑hander Eric Lauer, who struggled to a 6.69 ERA in eight appearances, was designated for assignment.

Barger’s slump continued after his return, going 1‑for‑22 in nine games and seeing his season average dip below expectations. Last year he posted a .243 line with 21 homers and 74 RBIs, and shone in the postseason with a .536 on‑base percentage and a historic pinch‑hit grand slam. Toronto now leans on Piñango and Rodríguez to sustain offensive depth as the Rays visit.
