Baltimore Orioles have agreed to a one-year, $18.5 million contract with free-agent right-hander Chris Bassitt, sources confirmed to ESPN. The deal includes a $3 million signing bonus and $500,000 in incentives tied to starting 27 games, which Bassitt has achieved in each of the past five seasons. Bassitt, 37, posted a 3.96 ERA with 166 strikeouts in 170⅓ innings for the Blue Jays last season, showcasing his durability with 880⅓ innings over the past five years ranking eighth in MLB. He proved his playoff mettle in the 2022 ALCS and World Series, allowing just one run over 8⅔ innings.

Baltimore's overhauled rotation now features Bassitt alongside acquired right-handers Shane Baz and Zach Eflin, and closer Ryan Helsley, alongside re-signed starter Kyle Bradish. This aggressive spending, exceeding $200 million on free agents including slugger Pete Alonso, aims to solidify a rotation where Trevor Rogers and Dean Kremer are the only other established starters. Bassitt's consistency—a strikeout rate hovering between 22.2% and 22.6% annually—and his ability to handle high innings loads make him a key addition, especially as Zac Gallen and Lucas Giolito remained available.

The Orioles' push for a championship gains a proven veteran with postseason experience. Bassitt's career record stands at 83-65 with a 3.64 ERA, and he has been particularly effective against right-handed hitters (OPS .632) despite lefties posting a .844 OPS against him. This move positions Baltimore to challenge in the competitive AL East, leveraging Bassitt's reliability to complement their high-powered offense and deep free agency commitments.
