Athletics' Gunnar Hoglund Out for Season After Hip Surgery

Athletics right-hander Gunnar Hoglund will miss the entire 2025 season following hip surgery performed Tuesday at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado. Dr. Marc Philippon completed a hip labral repair and cartilage debridement on the 25-year-old pitcher, ending his hopes of contributing to Oakland's rotation this year.

Hoglund's injury issues date back to last season when his rookie campaign concluded in June due to left hip impingement. He managed just six starts in 2024, posting a 1-3 record with a 6.40 ERA. A knee injury in March further complicated his recovery timeline, keeping him on the injured list for most of spring training.

Manager Mark Kotsay expressed disappointment for Hoglund, noting the pitcher has done everything possible to return. Kotsay, who underwent multiple back surgeries during his playing career, emphasized the mental challenge of extended rehab and encouraged Hoglund to stay focused on his long-term career goals.

Originally selected 19th overall by Toronto in the 2021 draft out of Mississippi, Hoglund now faces another lengthy recovery period. The Athletics acquired him in the Matt Chapman trade, hoping he'd develop into a reliable starter. Instead, they'll need to rely on internal options while Hoglund rebuilds his arm strength for 2026.
