Hunter Greene, 27, will undergo season‑ending elbow surgery after a second opinion confirmed a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow. He was placed on the injured list Wednesday following soreness during his side session, and an MRI on Thursday led to the decision.

Dr. Neal El Attrache will perform the procedure in Los Angeles. Reds president of business operations Nick Krall said the ligament was failing and the team would proceed with a ligament‑around procedure. Greene previously had Tommy John surgery in 2018 and has had multiple IL stints.

Manager Terry Francona explained that Greene had only five starts this season, going 2‑2 with a 6.83 ERA. The Reds kept him despite trade interest, citing his 6‑year, $53 million extension signed in 2023 with a $21 million club option in 2029.

Greene’s injury history includes a 2024 All‑Star nod, a 2023 groin injury, and hip pain in 2023. The Reds now face a rotation that includes All‑Star right‑hander Chase Burns.
