John Carpino is retiring as Los Angeles Angels president after a 23-year tenure, the team announced Friday. Carpino, 66, has served as the franchise's president since November 2009 and worked closely with owner Arte Moreno dating back to the mid-1980s. Molly Jolly, the team's senior vice president of finance and administration, will succeed Carpino on April 6.

Carpino's 16-year presidency was the longest in franchise history. Under his leadership, Angel Stadium reached 3 million in attendance for 10 consecutive years and hosted the 2010 All-Star Game. The team signed stars like Mike Trout and Albert Pujols to lucrative contracts and acquired Shohei Ohtani from Japan. However, the Angels have struggled recently, suffering 10 consecutive losing seasons and making the playoffs only once since 2009.

Jolly becomes the first woman to hold the title of Angels president and will oversee both business and baseball operations, a role believed to make her the only woman in Major League Baseball with such comprehensive authority. Jolly enters her 26th season with the organization and previously managed all financial matters, legal and risk management, human resources, and information services. The hope is that Jolly represents a fresh start for an organization that has faced criticism for outdated infrastructure, minor league treatment, and broadcast issues.
