The American League defeated the National League 6-1 in the MLB Futures Game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Sunday. Leo De Vries, the San Diego Padres shortstop ranked as the No. 2 prospect in baseball by ESPN's Kiley McDaniel, led off the game with a single to left field, stole second and third base consecutively, and scored on a groundout by Boston Red Sox prospect Franklin Arias to give the AL an early lead. De Vries, who signed with the Padres for $4.2 million as the top international amateur in the 2024 class, finished the seven-inning exhibition 1-for-2 with two stolen bases before being replaced in the fourth inning.

The AL extended its advantage with five unanswered runs after the NL tied the game in the first inning on a groundout by Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jesús Made, McDaniel's top-ranked prospect. Nathan Flewelling, a catcher in the Tampa Bay Rays organization and a 2024 third-round pick from Canada, delivered the decisive blow with a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Flewelling was named the game's MVP. He is batting .261 with 16 home runs and an .890 OPS in 73 games at High-A this season.

De Vries, a switch-hitter, is batting .286 with 11 home runs, 31 steals and an .821 OPS in 75 games at Double-A this season. He was traded to the Athletics in a four-player package for closer Mason Miller and left-hander JP Sears last summer. The Athletics are scheduled to relocate to Las Vegas in 2028.
