2026 MLB Home Run Derby Field Takes Shape

The 2026 MLB Home Run Derby field is beginning to form, with Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays and Ben Rice of the New York Yankees already committing to the July 13 event at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Caminero, the reigning AL Player of the Week and Month, enters the competition on a hot streak, having hit a home run in six consecutive games. His 80.0 mph average bat speed leads the majors, and he finished as the runner-up last year. However, his youth is a potential factor, as no player as young as Caminero is now has ever won the Derby.

Ben Rice has emerged as a significant power threat, hitting 51 home runs since the start of the 2025 season. His 91.8 mph average exit velocity and 14.7% barrel rate indicate his consistent ability to drive the ball. Notably, both of the last two Derby champions, Cal Raleigh and Teoscar Hernandez, won in their first appearance, suggesting Rice's debut may not be a disadvantage.

Despite his power, Rice does exhibit some swing-and-miss tendencies, with 86 strikeouts in 85 games this season and a 24.9% whiff rate. Sustaining consistent home run barrages across multiple rounds is essential for Derby success, and Rice's strikeout issues could pose a challenge.
