WNBA Star Kara Braxton Dies at 43: Legacy of a Two-Time Champion

Kara Braxton, a two-time WNBA champion with the Detroit Shock, has died at age 43. The league announced her passing Sunday, with no cause of death provided. A 6-foot-6 forward/center, Braxton played collegiately at Georgia (2001-2004) before being drafted 7th overall by Detroit in 2005.

She won titles with Detroit in 2006 and 2008 and was named an All-Star in 2007, averaging 7.6 points and 4.7 rebounds over her 10-year career. Traded to the New York Liberty in 2011, she concluded her career there in 2014. Her son, Ohio State football player Jelani Thurman, transferred to North Carolina in January 2024.
