Texas Teen Found Guilty in Fatal Track Meet Stabbing of Rival Athlete

A Collin County jury convicted Karmelo Anthony, 19, of murder Tuesday for fatally stabbing Austin Metcalf, a 17-year-old track athlete from a rival Frisco high school. The April 2025 incident occurred during a rainy track meet when Anthony refused to leave Memorial High School's tent in the stadium bleachers. Witnesses described a heated exchange that escalated quickly.

Anthony's self-defense claim fell apart under testimony from multiple students who said he pulled a knife after Metcalf pushed him. Prosecutor Bill Wirskye called it a "sneak, surprise attack" while defense attorney Mike Howard argued his client acted out of fear during chaos. The trial attracted national attention and heavy courthouse security despite both families describing their sons as good students planning college.

Social media amplified the case through racial framing, though prosecutors insisted the incident had no racial motivation. Judge John Roach Jr. kept teenage witnesses' names confidential. Anthony now faces life in prison at sentencing, leaving two families and a community grappling with the tragic loss of a promising young athlete.
