Real Salt Lake and United States attacking midfielder Diego Luna is expected to be out for months and will likely undergo an arthroscopic procedure to determine the extent of a knee injury, sources confirmed to ESPN. Luna was listed as absent for Real Salt Lake's loss to New York City FC on Saturday due to a problem with his knee.

The Athletic first reported the extent of the injury. Luna, 23, will miss a crucial part of the 2026 MLS season and the next U.S. men's national team call-up. The U.S. will face Peru, Chile, Mexico, and Canada in friendlies from late September through early October, the first games of a new World Cup cycle under coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Luna has made 18 appearances, scoring four goals, since debuting in 2024 but was a surprise omission from the 2026 World Cup roster. The injury could also impact a possible move abroad this winter after being linked with clubs outside MLS.

The MLS regular season concludes on Nov. 7, with Salt Lake a point out of the final playoff position in the Western Conference. ESPN's Jeff Carlisle contributed.
