Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt publicly backed quarterback Brendan Sorsby's potential return from gambling addiction, acknowledging the complexity of a situation that has sparked controversy across college athletics. Hocutt emphasized that Sorsby will miss the first two games of the 2026 season against Abilene Christian and Oregon State under the court's temporary injunction.

The NCAA ruled Sorsby ineligible after discovering he wagered approximately $90,000 on professional and college sports over four years, including 40 bets on Indiana football during his freshman season in 2022. Judge Ken Curry granted the temporary injunction, prompting the NCAA to appeal to the Seventh District Court in Amarillo. Sorsby committed to comprehensive clinical and compliance measures before any lawsuit was filed.

Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark and athletic directors from TCU and Kansas State have suggested conference sanctions against Texas Tech, with potential penalties including restrictions on postseason appearances and revenue distributions. The conference can impose discipline through a supermajority vote under Big 12 Bylaw 3.6.

Hocutt argued that removing Sorsby from his support system would not protect anyone, despite criticism calling the situation a threat to sporting integrity. Texas Tech maintains it was not involved in filing the lawsuit and will prioritize student welfare while remaining transparent in its decision-making process.
