North Carolina coach Bill Belichick announced Thursday that his son, defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, is on an indefinite medical leave. No further details were provided regarding Steve Belichick's condition or his availability for the season opener against TCU on August 29.

Bill Belichick stated that the defensive staff will collectively manage Steve's responsibilities. He indicated that an interim coordinator might be named if Steve is unable to coach for the opener. Steve Belichick, 39, previously served as defensive coordinator under his father at North Carolina and also worked with him on the New England Patriots' staff.

This development comes as the North Carolina football program begins fall practice. The team recently announced that general manager Michael Lombardi was also placed on leave pending an investigation into his conduct.
