SEC commissioner Greg Sankey declared his league the strongest after spring meetings in Miramar. He said the SEC’s breadth and depth outshine rivals, even as the Big Ten has secured three straight national titles. Sankey highlighted the narrow margin that separates the conferences in playoff showdowns.

Sankey pointed to recent playoff games to explain the Big Ten’s edge. Michigan’s 27-20 overtime win over Alabama at the Rose Bowl and Ohio State’s 28-14 victory against Texas in the Cotton Bowl underscored the SEC’s missed opportunities in clutch moments that left the conference scrambling for a title.

The SEC has missed a national championship game for three seasons, its longest drought since 1999‑2002. ESPN Research noted at least one SEC team appeared in 16 of 17 championship games from 2006 to 2022, showing the league’s historical consistency despite recent setbacks that fuels ongoing debates about conference dominance.

Sankey warned that every SEC team is vying to climb back to the top, noting the league’s competitive spirit. With less than 100 days to the season, the SEC’s depth could prove decisive in the playoff race, especially as the Big Ten’s champions loom large on the national stage.
