Rory McIlroy withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational third round Saturday due to back muscle spasms that persisted during his warmup at Bay Hill. The four-time major champion experienced discomfort that didn't subside as he prepared for his tee time, forcing him to pull out about 30 minutes before his scheduled start.

This marks McIlroy's first significant back issue since the 2023 Tour Championship, when he played through discomfort. The spasms aren't expected to impact his upcoming Players Championship defense, where he enters as the reigning champion. His withdrawal comes at a critical juncture, with the Masters approaching on April 9-12, where he'll defend his title as the sixth player to complete the career Grand Slam.

McIlroy has withdrawn from only three tournaments in his career, previously leaving the 2009 Nedbank Golf Challenge with flu symptoms and withdrawing from the 2013 Honda Classic mid-round due to mental health struggles. The 34-year-old Northern Irishman's health remains crucial as he approaches what could be a historic stretch of major championship golf.
