Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando after suffering back spasms during his pre-round warmup. The PGA Tour announced the Northern Irishman's withdrawal approximately 30 minutes before his scheduled tee time for the third round.

McIlroy, a five-time major champion, experienced a twinge in his back while warming up in the gym before the pain intensified during his practice session on the range. The 36-year-old was nine shots behind the leaders and tied for ninth place after shooting four under on Friday following a level-par opening round.

This injury comes at a critical juncture in McIlroy's season as he was preparing to defend his titles at next week's Players Championship at Sawgrass and the Masters at Augusta in April. The withdrawal is particularly concerning given McIlroy's recent form and his pursuit of maintaining momentum after winning the Masters last year to complete his career Grand Slam.
