The Texas Rangers have acquired left-hander MacKenzie Gore from the Washington Nationals in a five-for-one trade. The Nationals will receive third baseman Gavin Fien, the 12th overall pick in last year's draft, plus four other prospects. Gore, an All-Star in the first half of 2025, slumped to a 6.75 ERA after the break, finishing the season 5-15 with a 4.17 ERA and 185 strikeouts.

Washington adds a significant prospect package to its rebuild, headlined by Fien. For the Rangers, Gore provides a cost-controlled rotation piece with two years of team control remaining. His 2026 salary is estimated at $4.7 million. Gore, the third overall pick in 2017, has been solid but hasn't yet become the front-line starter many projected, ranking 23rd in pitcher WAR over the past two seasons.

Gore’s arsenal leans heavily on fastball/slider combinations, and developing a reliable fourth pitch is seen as key to his next step. The trade, first reported by the New York Post, gives Texas another arm for its competitive window while deepening Washington’s farm system. It’s a calculated move for both clubs, addressing immediate needs and future potential.
