NFL Free Agency: Bill Barnwell Tiers Top Defensive Players

ESPN's Bill Barnwell has released his defensive player tiers for the 2026 NFL free agency class, revealing a perilously thin market at key positions. While offensive free agents drew attention last week, Barnwell notes that front offices face significant challenges finding impact defenders this offseason.

Last year's spending champion was the New England Patriots, who invested heavily in defensive standouts like Milton Williams and Carlton Davis III. Their success in reaching the Super Bowl demonstrates how quickly a defense can be transformed through free agency. However, this year's class lacks the depth of previous years, particularly at defensive tackle and other critical positions.

At the top of the edge rusher market is Trey Hendrickson, whose 2024 Defensive Player of the Year-caliber season makes him the premier free agent. Despite a disappointing 2025 campaign limited by injuries, Hendrickson's track record over the past three seasons still projects him as a Pro Bowl-level player. Barnwell projects him to land a contract in the $25-31 million range annually, though teams may be more cautious given his recent injury history and age.
