NCAA Denies Texas Tech Appeal, Sorsby Stays Ineligible

Texas Tech’s bid to restore quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s eligibility was rejected by the NCAA, ending the Red Raiders’ hopes of fielding the former Cincinnati starter this season. Sorsby was ruled ineligible after admitting to gambling on sports, including games involving his own team while at Indiana. The denial cuts a key option for the program in this severe situation today.

The appeal followed Texas Tech’s May 26 petition after the NCAA denied its initial request on May 22. President Lawrence Schovanec urged the governing body to reverse the ruling, but the NCAA held firm. Meanwhile, Sorsby’s May 18 lawsuit seeks a temporary injunction to play this year, but a Texas judge has yet to decide in the court again.

With the NCAA ruling in place, Texas Tech must explore other roster options as the regular season looms. Sorsby remains ineligible and his lawsuit continues in Lubbock County, where a two‑hour hearing took place on Monday. The Red Raiders’ coaching staff will need to adjust their offensive plans without the former star for the upcoming games and to maintain team.
