LIV Golf Hong Kong: Rahm's Flight Gets Detry to Lead

Thomas Detry and Jon Rahm share the lead at LIV Golf Hong Kong after a dramatic journey that began with both players stranded in the United Arab Emirates. Detry, one of eight LIV golfers caught in the Middle East during Israeli and U.S. attacks on Iran, credited Rahm for arranging a charter flight that got them to the tournament.

Rahm, whose Legion XIII team partnered with a private aviation company, organized transportation that required a 280-mile drive from Dubai to Muscat, Oman, followed by an eight-hour flight to Hong Kong. The attacks had canceled flights and created uncertainty for players living in Dubai or traveling between LIV events in Australia and Hong Kong. Detry shot a 66 on Saturday, joining Rahm (65) and Harold Varner III (63) in a three-way tie for the lead heading into the final round.

Rahm described the gesture as simply his duty, saying he was raised with values that compel helping others when capable. He focused on getting the players to safety rather than tournament concerns. Detry had been booked on an Emirates flight that departed Wednesday morning but arrived too late for practice rounds. The Spaniard's refusal to accept a European Tour deal that would eliminate fines for playing LIV Golf added another layer to an already eventful week.
