Katherine Legge's Indy 500 Crash Ends Historic Double Attempt

Katherine Legge's bid to become the first woman to complete 'The Double' ended abruptly Sunday when she crashed after just 17 laps in the Indianapolis 500. The English driver tangled with Ryan Hunter-Reay in Turn 2, steering low to avoid spinning traffic but collected the inside wall instead.

Legge became only the sixth driver to attempt the 1,100-mile challenge combining Indy and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600. Tony Stewart remains the sole driver to complete both races back in 2001. Her week spiraled from the start: flight delays caused her to miss media day, followed by practice communication issues and Saturday's rainout at Charlotte qualifying.

Despite the early exit, Legge still plans to compete in Charlotte, where she'll start 37th for Live Fast Motorsports. The crash continues a troubling trend for Double attempts, with weather and incidents derailing recent efforts including Kyle Larson's 2024 and 2025 tries. Hunter-Reay, who also crashed, called it the busiest he'd been at Indy in 16 years.
